Luke 11

THE COST OF FOLLOWING JESUS:

1.    The power of Christ displayed.

a.    Luke 9:37-43a

                                      i.     A desperate father who the disciples could not help.

ii.     Jesus points to the root problem: A faithless and perverse generation.

iii.     Jesus does a powerful deliverance.

b.    Faith must be in Christ’s power, yielding our weakness to His authority.

2.    The prediction again of Jesus’ suffering.

a.    Luke 9:43b-45

b.    The crowd marveled at His works, but Jesus did not revel in the crowd’s reaction as He was on mission preparing His disciples.

c.     The disciples did not understand and were afraid to ask about the prediction.

3.    The pride the disciples displayed.

a.    Luke 9:46-50

b.    Competition instead of cooperation.

c.     True greatness is humble service = Kingdom workers are not competitors but co-laborers.

4.    The resolve of Jesus and the kingdom.

a.    Luke 9:51

b.    Jesus resolutely set His face toward Jerusalem which reflects His determined mission.

c.     Luke 9:52-56

d.    A preview of Jerusalem happens—Samaritans refuse Him.

e.    Luke 9:57-62

f.      Three encounters that show the cost of discipleship:

g.    Comfort is not the deciding factor.

h.    Urgency is the deciding factor.

i.      Loyalty to Jesus is a deciding factor.

j.      Summed up: Following Christ requires full commitment.
