Revelation 2

WHAT IS THE COMMON MESSAGE TO ALL THE CHURCHES:

1.    An honest assessment — “I know…”

a.    Jesus evaluates every church according to what He sees, not merely what the church sees in itself.

b.    Jesus doesn’t merely evaluate the church’s reputation; He evaluates its reality.

2.    A spiritual invitation — “He who has an ear…”

a.    Every church needs to listen to every message.

b.    Every church needs to apply every message.

3.    A challenge to overcome — “To him who overcomes…”

a.    The goal isn’t simply information—it is transformation.

b.    The Christian life isn’t passive, we must hear, then respond to overcome.

c.     Jesus isn’t simply writing a report about seven churches. He is confronting individual believers in those churches.

d.    The message comes corporately, but the response is personal.

4.    An eternal promise is given – “I will give…”

a.    Notice the connection to your Revelation 1:18: Jesus says, “I have the keys of Hades and of Death.”

CHURCH AT EPHESUS:

1.    Christ’s commendation. 

a.    Revelation 2:1–3

b.    They were a working, persevering, and doctrinally sound church. 

2.    Christ’s confrontation

a.    Revelation 2:4 

b.    Their service to Christ had become disconnected from their affection for Christ.

c.     You can still be doing church while no longer being the church Christ wants you to be.

3.    Christ’s correction.

a.    Revelation 2:5–7 

b.    Jesus doesn't simply identify the problem—He gives them the way back.

c.     There is a connection between love and obedience.

d.    1 John 5:5 

e.    Repentance leads to promise—I will give to eat from the tree of life—which is restoration!
